Maurits Verbist was a Belgian artist who was born in 1913 in Neerijse and died in 1984 in Veltem-Beisem. Through his painting he testified to his great interest in village life, popular entertainment and popular devotion. Is almost considered the last true representative of Flemish expressionism. In the free drawing studio in Sint-Lambrechts-Woluwe he met Edgard Tytgat, who would become one of his best friends. Took over the free drawing studio around 1950 and added a graphics studio in 1952. During the last ten years of his life he made many trips and visited Yugoslavia, Mexico, the Bahamas, Canada, Ireland and France. These travels naturally formed a rich source of inspiration for his later work and influenced his color palette.
